Melissa Ross runs Melissa’s Mobile Boutique, a business that sells vintage cars, women’s and children’s clothing, and hair products. Passionate about nature, she tends to her garden on the terrace of her apartment. ‘It makes me very happy,’ she says.
A commitment born of personal connections
A resident of the Little River neighbourhood, just minutes from downtown Miami, she is actively involved in meetings organised by the Cleo Institute, where Beritha Howar, coordinator of Empowering Resilient Women, is a figure she has known for many years through their former religious community. « I am very committed to fighting climate change, defending rights and empowering women. So when I discovered The CLEO Institute through Beritha, I immediately wanted to be part of it. «
Gardening as therapy and a social link
Melissa participates in the gardening activities organised by the group. She says she recently weeded and prepared the soil for collective planting. For her, this activity goes beyond simple farming: ‘Personally, I really enjoy gardening. It’s very therapeutic.’ Having suffered from depression, she testifies to the importance of this support: « I am literally unable to speak when I am depressed… but I draw strength not only from my faith, but also from the wonderful women who are so loving, caring and supportive. ‘
The Miami Workers Center, where the meetings are held, also plays a crucial role in protecting housing rights: ’If they have to go to court to defend someone facing eviction, they do it. It’s a safe and welcoming place for all women. »
Observing the effects of climate change
Melissa says she has noticed significant climate change in Florida: ‘The weather is sometimes very unstable here… I’ve noticed that there have been a lot of hurricanes.’
She stresses the importance of being prepared for crises, mentioning the comprehensive emergency kit she received from another activist, which contains a fan, lamps, batteries and a cooler.
A message of hope for younger generations
Very fond of children, Melissa wants to instil confidence and resilience in them: ‘I want all my children to know that there is nothing to fear. God is always aware of what is happening.’ Addressing young people, including those in France, she promises: ‘When you are older, you will be so wise that you will be able to help the next generation, and the one after that.’
